So many big movies to catch this summer! The 暑期档 is harvest season for every 系列IP. I rushed to Spider-Man: Brand New Day first: the 续作 in Marvel's Spider-Man series, backed by one of Marvel's most successful 超级大片IP, and it 狂揽 2 billion dollars worldwide. My blood was pumping the whole time — on the way home I honestly wanted to swing through the city like Spidey. I also stayed back after the credits for the 片尾彩蛋, because that's just what Marvel does. Classic playbook: once the numbers deliver, a 前传, another sequel, and a 衍生作品 get greenlit immediately. And yes, I caught Nolan's The Odyssey too.
A: Okay, the summer movie season is basically over and I have no one to debrief with. What did you end up seeing?
B: Just one, actually. Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Went on opening day, no regrets. It's the sequel to the previous Spider-Man movies, and it already grossed 2 billion dollars worldwide.
A: Two billion?! Was it actually good, or just hype?
B: Genuinely good! My heart was racing the whole time. I walked out wanting to swing between buildings like Spidey. Oh, and I stayed for the post-credit scene, obviously.
A: Of course you did. That's the Marvel machine for you. The moment a blockbuster franchise does well, a prequel and a spin-off get announced before you've even left the parking lot.
B: Can't blame them, it works every time. What about you?
A: I went the other way. I caught Nolan's The Odyssey. It's an adaptation of Homer's epic poem, so I walked in knowing the entire plot.
B: Wait, you got tickets?! I've been trying for weeks! I wanted a dead-center seat and everything. I mean, it's Nolan. Every single show is packed.
A: I booked the second the presale opened, a whole week out. And honestly? Even knowing the plot, the three hours of IMAX gave me goosebumps. The visuals and the sound were just unreal.
B: Now I'm just bitter. The other ones look decent too, but have you seen what people are saying about Niulai?
A: Oh, the animated film with animation so bad it loops back to being art? I saw two seconds of it and instantly called it a box office flop. Maybe even a box office bomb.
B: That's the thing! It didn't flop at all. The word of mouth somehow decided it's "so bad it's performance art," and now the worse the reviews get, the more tickets people buy.
A: So it's actually... a hit?
B: Not just a box office hit. It's the dark horse of the whole summer. A certified sleeper hit. People are literally buying tickets to see how bad it is.
A: I need to sit down for this. Weren't its production costs basically zero?
B: Zero-ish. Barely any marketing either. So every ticket is basically pure profit. It probably broke even before opening day was even over.
A: So real blockbusters spend hundreds of millions and grind for years just to do well, and this thing got rich by being absurd. What a time to be alive.
B: Honestly? No notes. The world is simply too absurd.
Describe a movie you watched recently that made a strong impression on you.
You should say:
I'd like to talk about a movie I watched a couple of weeks ago called Niulai, which honestly was the biggest dark horse of this year's summer movie season. You know, the box office here broke 10 billion yuan this summer, with all the blockbusters getting a wide release and massive marketing. So nobody expected that the movie everyone ended up talking about was this tiny, almost zero-budget animated film. When I first saw the clips online, I genuinely predicted it would be a box office flop. I was so wrong.
My friend basically dragged me to the cinema. She kept quoting the online reviews, saying it was "so bad it's performance art," and I just couldn't resist seeing that for myself. And here's the funny part: the theater was packed. Everyone around me was there for the same reason, to verify exactly how bad it was. That's the power of word of mouth. The movie got roasted every single day, and somehow every roast sold more tickets. It turned into a genuine sleeper hit, something nobody saw coming.
As for the plot, honestly, there isn't much to summarize, which is part of why it became a meme. The animation is rough, the story is paper-thin, but it takes itself so seriously that the whole thing becomes weirdly fascinating. Meanwhile, the real blockbusters with hundreds of millions in production costs were fighting for screens and reviews, and this little film just... quietly grossed its way to 100 million yuan. It probably broke even before opening weekend was over, since it cost almost nothing to make.
So why did it leave such a strong impression? I guess because it completely broke my assumptions about how the movie industry works. I used to think a box office hit required a huge franchise, famous stars, and a massive marketing budget. This movie had none of that. Its production costs were basically zero, it spent almost nothing on marketing, so every single ticket was pure profit. In a way, it accidentally achieved what every Hollywood studio dreams of. Watching it, I wasn't just watching a bad movie, I was watching the whole world be absurd in real time. That's not something you forget.
Every year, many highly anticipated movies are released during the summer movie season.
Many blockbuster movies get a wide release during the summer.
词源:Block(块)+ Buster(破坏者)→ 原指二战时的巨型炸弹,形容"轰动到炸"的电影。
- Highly anticipated /ˌhaɪli ænˈtɪsɪpeɪtɪd/: 备受期待的。词源:anticipate = ante(在前)+ capere(拿住)→ 提前拿住 → 预料、期待。
- Be released in theaters在影院上映 。
- Wide release
Many art films and Oscar contenders start with a limited release in just a few theaters, then expand based on word of mouth.
- Word of mouth /ˌwɜːd əv ˈmaʊθ/: 口碑。
The movie did well at the box office.
(Movie that went viral for terrible animation becomes China box office hit.
Spider-Man is one of Marvel's most successful movie franchises.
- Box office /ˈbɒks ɒfɪs/: 票房。 衍生表达:box office ranking(票房榜)、top the box office(登顶票房榜)。
- Do well /duː wel/: 口语高频搭配,后面接 in/at + 领域,如 do well in an exam(考试考得好)。
- Franchise /ˈfræntʃaɪz/: 系列电影;IP。
或者:a box office bomb 票房炸弹。
(The movie became a sleeper hit and surprised everyone.
- Dark horse /ˈdɑːk hɔːs/:
作动词:(The movie grossed $500 million worldwide. 作名词:(The film's worldwide gross reached $500 million.
净利润叫 net profit,"回本"是 break even,The movie needs to gross \$800 million to break even.(这部电影票房要达到8亿美元才能回本。)
- Gross /ɡrəʊs/: v. 总收入达到(The movie grossed \$500 million);n. 总收入(a film's worldwide gross)。 与 net(净)相对,如 gross profit(毛利润)。
也可以说 production budget(制作预算)。
